Tassel Bookmark

Make your own bookmark and learn how to make a puffy tassel. If you are new to sewing, then this tutorial is perfect and straight forward to do.

What you will need:

  • Thread

  • Scissors

  • 5cm x 5cm piece of card

  • 5cm x 20cm piece of card

  • Sewing machine

  • 6cm x 21cm The Craft Cotton Company’s’ Floral Sketches Large Rose cotton print

First, make the tassel:

Cut off 300cm (2 arm spans). Keep folding this length in half until it is approximately 20cm long.

Repeat this step to get 2 20cm long pieces of folded thread.

To make the tassels, take your reel of thread and wrap it around the cardboard.

When it is thick enough, take one of the 20cm piece and loop it through the thread and tie a double knot.

Take the tread off the cardboard.

Take the second 20cm piece and tie it around the top part of the thread and tie a double knot.

Wrap the ends of this thread around the thread a couple of times and the tie in a double knot and cut off the excess.

Cut the thread along the centre of the loops.

Now attach the tassel to the fabric:

Fold the fabric in half length-ways with right-sides together and pin. Slot the tassel inside the folded fabric in one of the folded corners.

Leave 3cm of the tassel’s end sticking out. Pin the tassel to secure.

Sew around the fabric with a 0.5cm seam allowance. Leave the short end without the tassel unsewn.

Tip: Cut the corners of the fabric (make sure not to cut too close to the seam) and cut the ends of the tassel sticking out. This makes the corners of the bookmark pointier.

Finally, insert the card and edge stitch:

Turn the fabric through.

Slot in the 5cm x 20cm piece of card.
