- Commemorative Memo Board
A beautiful gift to commemorate a special day in someone’s life. I used some diamante beading to create the ‘90’, so I could give this memo board as a gift for a special lady turning 90 years old. Its somewhere she can put all her appointment cards and important notes. Supplies: • Fat quarter of pale pink fabric • 32” x 16” piece of batting (folded in half) • 16” square of flamingo print fabric • 4 strips of denim fabric measuring 2” x 18” each • Backing fabric measuring 18”square • Half metre of diamante beads • 10 decorative small flowers and 10 paper fasteners • 2 metres of silver ribbon, ¼” wide • 16” square fibreboard • Glue gun, basting glue, staple gun, nail and hammer (decorative items were purchased from hobby craft) Let’s get creative: Begin by making a paper heart, with the widest point measuring 11”, use this as your template to draw round using a fabric marker pen onto your pink fabric. Carefully cut out the heart and with a little basting glue, set in place on the flamingo fabric. Use a blanket stitch to hold the heart in place. Using your marker pen and ruler, draw lines diagonally across the flamingo fabric in each direction, 5” apart. I chose the 5” gap so the ‘90’ wouldn’t be covered by the ribbon. Take your piece of batting and fold it in half to make a 16” square, temporary baste this to your flamingo fabric, and sew along the diagonal lines. Take the four denim cotton strips, and with right sides together, and using ½” seam, sew them onto the flamingo fabric, to create the boarder. Turn the board over, and whilst putting some tension on the blue fabric strips, staple the fabric to the back of the board. To attach the ribbon; I used a small nail and hammer, and tapped a small hole where each of my sewn lines crossed. Holding the ribbon in place, push the paper fasteners through the ribbon and through to the back of the board, open the clips, repeat this until all 10 points are securing the ribbon. I used a hot glue gun to attach the ‘90’ diamante beads in place, and the decorative flowers onto the top of the pin heads. I also used a little glue to hold the ribbon in place on the reverse of the board. Take your piece of backing fabric, and baste it to the centre of the back of the board. Fold the edges under to create a neat edge, and heat glue in place. Many thanks for reading my tutorial, hope you enjoy creating your very own ‘commemorative memo board’, it would make a lovely gift, to mark a special occasion. - How to Sew a Motivational Quilt
I guess the words I chose stem from me, always wishing stuff would happen, or moaning about why things didn't happen... so from now on I’m going to… MAKE IT HAPPEN … Supplies needed: • Fat quarter bundles of the *scrummy florals from craftcotton • 2 Fat quarters of lightweight interfacing • White cotton fabric measuring 30” x 46” • Batting measuring 32” x 24” (this is the softest batting I’ve ever used – love it) • Templates for letters, hearts and flowers • Basic sewing supplies Note: * I used a few from each of the Floral Daisy Collection in ‘Salmon, Navy, Blue and Aqua. Let’s begin: The difficult part, is choosing the fabrics, I wanted to put them all in to the quilt from this beautiful collection. Using a heart template that measures 4” at it widest point, mark out 7 of these onto your interfacing, roughly cut these out and iron them onto the wrong side of your pink floral fabric Using the same process, create 6 flowers, in the blue floral fabric using a simple flower template measuring 3” at its widest point, I used a 3/4” circle in salmon to create the centres. To create the lettering, I chose the font I preferred in ‘word’ and enlarged it, so each letter measured 2.5” x 2.5”, using the same process as before, draw out each letter but this time in reverse onto your interfacing, and iron onto the wrong side of your chosen floral fabric – see photo below… Now all our appliques are complete, we can start the process of arranging them onto our white fabric. I used a little basting glue to hold them in place, while I blanket stitched by machine around each applique I began at the bottom and worked my way up the quilt, using a long clear quilting ruler as I went… Once you are happy with the positioning of your applique, begin by blanket stitching the large heart in the middle, and working your way out to the edges Sandwich your batting between the top and bottom of your quilt, baste with a spray glue to hold in place, while you quilt. Drop your feed dogs and attach your quilting foot, designing your free motion pattern as you go. (if you don’t have a quilting foot, you can leave your feed dogs up and quilt in straight lines using your usual foot). Trim your quilt on all edges, and you’re ready to bind. Making your hanging strip… Make a strip using the pink floral fabric that measures 28” x 4”, I had to join two strips together to create this length. Fold in half long ways and with right sides together, sew a ¼” seam. Turn right way out, and sew ¼” from the top of your quilt You can now sew on your binding, (I made my own using some of the floral fabrics) Attach with right side together to the front of the quilt, fold over the edges, and hand-sew using a binding stitch. When you reach the top where your hanging strip is, your binding should cover any sewing lines To hang your motivational quilt, use a 1” doweling rod. - Dog bed cover by Debbie Shore
This cover is to fit a foam bed measuring 24” x 22”, and is 74” in circumference. It has a zip in the base so that it can be removed for washing. Sewing experience is necessary, you may find it easier to use a fabric such as fleece, that has a little stretch to it. Use ½” seam allowance. Materials: Foam bed 45” x 54” fabric 20” zip Temporary fabric glue stick 1. Sit the foam bed on your fabric, draw around the oval shape, then cut an oval ½” wider all the way round. You’ll need a second oval of fabric for inside the bed, ½” wider all the way round. The easiest way to do this is to push your fabric inside the bed, and draw around the shape of the base with an erasable ink pen, then cut out the shape ½” larger. 2. The panel that goes around the outside measures 75” x 7”, the inside panel measures 66” x 5 ½”. You may need to join a couple of strips of fabric. Sew the short ends of the strips together to make two loops of fabric. The larger loop fits around the outside of the bed, the smaller hoop on the inside. 3. Use the cut-out shape at the front of the bed as a template to draw, then cut out a section of the fabric strips, ½” smaller than the foam to allow for a seam. 4. Sew the two loops of fabric right sides together around the cut-out section. Snip into the curves. 5. Sew the tops of the two loops together. As the outer loop is larger than the inside, you’ll need to put a few tucks in the outside loops to make them fit. Pin these first to make sure they are even, you’ll find a little tuck every 4 inches should do the trick! 6. Take the large oval base piece of fabric, fold in half lengthways and crease the centre line. Draw a box, centrally over the crease line, measuring 18” x ½”. 7. Cut along the centre crease, taking the cuts into the corners of the box. Press the edges of the box towards the wrong side. 8. Apply glue from your stick around the wrong side of the box. Place the zip over the hole, making sure the slider is positioned in the gap. 9. Leave the glue to set a little, then sew around the zip in a box, with the zipper foot on your machine. You’ll find this easier to sew from the right side. 10. Fold each oval section into quarters, and crease to make the centre points. Repeat with the side pieces. Match up the marks with the inner base and the inner side sections, then pop in plenty of pins to attach the base, right sides together. 11. Sew in place, then repeat with the zipped outer base and side sections. 12. Turn the right side out and fit over the foam bed. 13. I also made a little tartan cushion to go inside my bed, simply by cutting two pieces of fabric ½” larger than the inside base of the bed, and four layers of wadding ½”smaller. Sew the two pieces of fabric right sides together leaving a turning gap in one side of about 8”, turn the right side out, push the wadding layers inside and sew the opening closed by hand. As he whole cushion can be washed there’s no need to make the cover removable. - Christmas Chair Bow Tutorial
Add an extra bit of Christmas decoration to your Christmas dinner table this year with some Christmassy chair bows. Materials Fat quarter set in Christmas Birdhouse by The Craft Cotton Company, one fat quarter set will make approximately 2-3 bows depending upon the size of your chairs. Batting Scissors Pins Needle Thread Tape measure Step 1 Measure the full width around the back of the chair you will be tying your bows around, next add 176 cm to this measurement. This is how long each of your bows will need to be. Step 2 To make the bows cut to fat quarter fabric into 20 cm wide strips. Next using alternating pattern designs sew together these 20 cm wide strips by placing the fabric strips right sides together and sewing down the short end. Repeat this process until the strip measures the length required. Press the seams flat. Step 3 Cut a batting strip 10 cm wide and the length of the fabric strip. You can join multiple strips of batting together if you don’t have one long piece, just sew down the joins to secure the pieces together. Step 4 Fold the fabric strip in half right sides together and place the batting strip on top along the top folded edge, pin to hold. Step 5 Cut each of the ends of the fabric strip on a diagonal. Step 6 Starting in the middle of the long edge sew along the bottom edge and up the side. Next starting 10 cm down from the previous starting point sew along the bottom edge in the other direction and up the other side. This 10 cm gap is for turning. Step 7 Turn out the right way and slip stitch the gap closed. Step 8 Tie in a bow to the back of your chair. - Tartan Christmas Cushions
Change your cushion covers to get into the Christmas spirit and make your home warm and Christmassy. You will need: Craft Cotton Co. Tartan Fat Quarter pack x 2 Co-ordinating threads and scrap fabrics for the embellishments Sewing machine, pins or clips Erasable fabric pen Fabric glue How to make: Press fabrics on a cotton setting first. Use a ¼ “seam allowance throughout the project. Measuring: Take two matching fat quarters and measure 17” x 18” squares x 2 and cut these out. If you are making different sizes then measure to match your cushion pads. For the wreath cushion, place a plate onto one side of the cushion fabric and draw around with an erasable pen. Next embellish the circle with anything you would like to use. I cut out some leaf and flower shapes from felt and glued these on using just a little fabric glue. Machine or hand sew these in place and add as you go along until you’re happy with your design. Place the two pieces of fabric together, right sides in, and sew along three sides, the forth side sewing 2 inches in along each side so you have a gap left to put in your cushion pad. Turn the cushion cover the right sides out and press, then fold your cushion pad in half and gently push into the cushion cover, ensuring that the corners of the pad are pushed right into the corners of the cushion cover. For the Sausage Dog Cushion I used the same method as above, but I drew out a dog shape, cut this out in a contrasting fabric then appliquéd it onto the cushion cover. For the Christmas Tree Cushion I used the same method as above, but I used a contrasting fabric with the tartan and free-hand cut out some basic tree shapes which I appliquéd on to the cover. I added some rick-rack too.
